The company’s primary goal soon became the training of post-war military pilots returning from active duty to work in the early civilian airlines. Plotters, regulations and training manuals were the first products. In 1960, the company broadened its production and development efforts with additional pilot supplies and books added to the ground school training line.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn 1969, the company became Northwest School of Aviation under a new owner, Roy Beech. The company’s goal was the franchise of the popular Merrell Ground School under the name “Aviation Seminars of America,” or ASA.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn November, 1976, Joe Cucchiari purchased the company. “Aviation Supplies and Academics” replaced Aviation Seminars of America as the name to go with the ASA acronym, and the company again broadened its product line to add cassette courses and new books and training materials. The company was incorporated in 1977. In 1981, Joe Finelli joined the organization, bringing 20 years of experience in printing and publishing with him. Ron McElroy holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Mechanics from the USAF Academy and a Master's Degree in Aeronautical Science from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He has over 39 years of experience as a pilot, having flown in more than 160 different types of aircraft. In addition, Ron completed the USAF Undergraduate Pilot Training program at Williams AFB and graduated from the USAF Test Pilot School at Edwards AFB. He is a flight test pilot for the Chicago Aircraft Certification Office under the FAA.
Ron's extensive background includes various military, airline, corporate, and general aviation operations roles. From being an instructor pilot to a consultant for NASA and a special missions pilot for Congress, DOD, and the White House, Ron brings a wealth of expertise. He has also published multiple books and study guides for pilots and has contributed articles to top publications. He has also served as a project pilot and consultant for numerous flight test projects, as well as as a captain for a major airline's flight test team. Additionally, he is a member of the FAA's WakeNetUSA panel for wake turbulence.
As a highly experienced industry expert with a vast skillset, Ron proudly holds an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate, along with 15 type ratings, Commercial Seaplane, and Private Glider privileges. With over 10,800 logged hours, including 4,800 hours of simulator time as a trainee and instructor pilot, Ron has honed his expertise in various instructional settings throughout his career. He has provided over 10,000 hours of top-quality instruction to USAF, general aviation, and airline students and trainees, utilizing USAF training curricula, FAA Practical Test Standards, and FAA-approved airline training courses.
